Enhance Your Look with Cheek Augmentation

In the quest to maintain a youthful appearance for as long as possible, the focus has turned to the cheekbone. As we age, the cheeks can tend to lose projection due to bone resorption and remodeling, which has been elegantly documented in 3-D CT’s of the human skull. In the comparison CT scans of a young versus older skull below, the cheekbone (malar bone) resorbs some bone resulting in loss of projection as well as mid-face width (which is very youthful). The arrows below point out how the skeletal profile becomes more vertical and as a result can lose volume. This is the same process that occurs in the spine, in that over time, we become a little shorter from bone resorption of the vertebrae. If you look closely you will also see other changes of the skull from the remodeling/resorption of bone (hint: look at the shapes of the eye socket!)

In more rare cases, people can be born with cheekbones that lack adequate projection which is evident at a young age. In either of these cases where the issue is bony, not soft tissue deficiency, cheek augmentation using implants can help restore volume, width, and projection to the cheeks for a younger look and a more youthful mid-face width and profile. A misconception is that cheek implants lift the soft tissues of the cheek and tightens the overlying skin.

What are Cheek Implants?

Implants are devices crafted of clear, solid, siliconized rubber that is designed to conform to the natural contour of the underlying cheekbone, resulting in a very natural look. Implants come in a wide range of shapes and sizes so they can be customized to a patient’s unique needs. Cheek augmentation is performed during an outpatient surgical procedure.

Benefits of cheek implants include:

• The procedure may be performed in just one and a half hours
• Incisions are placed inside the mouth so there is no visible scarring
• New implants offer more natural results than ever before
• Implants offer longer lasting results than any other type of cheek augmentation i.e. injections.

Dr. Burke Robinson offers cheek implant procedures at Robinson Facial Plastic Surgery. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis typically using general anesthesia.

When Aging Strikes

For patients that either inherited poorly projected cheekbones or that already have some signs of aging reflected by flattening of the cheek projection, cheek augmentation can restore a firmer, more youthful profile to the mid-face area. Most female patients usually comment on how their makeup is easier to apply since there is a more natural reflection of light due to the restoration of the normal contour of the face.

Dr. Robinson is highly experienced in cheek augmentation procedures and strives to produce the most natural, beautiful results in every patient. To learn more about this cosmetic procedure, contact Robinson Facial Plastic Surgery at 770-667-3090.
