Laser technology has been used for more than five decades in both the medical and cosmetic realm. This focused energy beam effectively interacts with skin and body tissue to produce a desired outcome without incisions or anesthesia. The technology can also be used to provide full skin resurfacing without the need for topical chemical solutions or other tools. At Robinson Facial Plastic Surgery, we have added laser technology to our arsenal of tools to help patients enhance their appearance with minimal discomfort and downtime.

Types of Laser Treatments
There are two basic types of laser treatments used in cosmetic medicine:

Ablative Lasers – Ablative treatments dissolve the top layers of skin, leaving smoother, more youthful skin underneath. This is an intense exfoliation treatment that requires a few days of downtime afterward. However, the results can be both dramatic and long-lasting.

Non-Ablative Lasers – These treatments work beneath the surface of the skin without disrupting the outer skin layers. Non-ablative treatments involve little discomfort and no downtime. However, a series of treatments, or regular maintenance sessions, may be required to keep the positive results.

How the Laser Works
Lasers emit a single wavelength of light that produces heat to destroy targeted areas like broken capillaries, brown spots or other blemishes. At the same time, the heat from the laser stimulates the body’s own collagen production. Collagen is a substance needed by the underlying skin structure to provide support and give skin its soft, supple appearance. As we age, our bodies produce less collagen, leading to skin loosening and the appearance of wrinkles. By stimulating collagen production, laser treatment can help the body’s natural processes restore youth and vitality to the skin.

Achieving Aesthetic Goals
Laser treatments can help you achieve a number of aesthetic goals:

• Repair uneven skin texture and tone
• Minimize the appearance of fine lines and facial wrinkles
• Eliminate vascular lesions and pigmentation spots
• Smooth away shallow scarring from acne and chicken pox
• Reduce enlarged pores
• Reverse sun damage and signs of aging
