Eyelid Surgery FAQ

Atlanta, Alpharetta, and the Surrounding Southeast – Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) Frequently Asked Questions

There are several questions that patients frequently ask Dr. Burke Robinson regarding lower eyelid surgery and upper eyelid surgery. Though each patient’s case is unique, Dr. Robinson believes that those considering the procedure can benefit from generalized information about eyelid surgery. Serving Atlanta, Alpharetta, and beyond, Dr. Robinson performs blepharoplasty (the technical name for eyelid surgery) on both men and women of various ages.

At what age is eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) usually performed?

According to Dr. Robinson, the blepharoplasty procedure can be performed as early as in the patient’s 20s, with no upper age limit. In fact, patients’ ages vary widely, as drooping, hooded lids are caused by both genetics and aging. Most patients are 35 and older, but younger patients can also take advantage of the aesthetic benefits of eyelid surgery.

How long will the results of eyelid surgery last?

In most cases, blepharoplasty patients will never find it necessary to have a "touch-up" surgery. "[Eyelid surgery] only has to be done once in a lifetime," says Dr. Robinson. After approximately one week of recovery time, patients enjoy dramatic and long-lasting improvements in their looks at a relatively inexpensive price. This is why Dr. Robinson says that blepharoplasty can be one of the best returns on an investment in your facial appearance.

Which procedures are frequently combined with blepharoplasty?

Patients may choose to undergo other procedures at the same time as eyelid surgery to create a more dramatic improvement in their appearance. At Robinson Facial Plastic Surgery serving Alpharetta, Atlanta, and beyond, blepharoplasty is sometimes combined with browlift surgery, which lifts the forehead area to eliminate the wrinkling and sagging that may detract from the appearance of the eyes and darken the face’s overall expression. Patients with fine lines and wrinkles often opt to undergo laser skin resurfacing to give their skin a firmer, more youthful texture.

Why is it important to have eyelid surgery performed by a facial plastic surgeon?

A high degree of surgical training is necessary if a doctor is to operate near the eyes safely. Most plastic surgeons do not specialize in facial plastic surgery and may perform as few as ten blepharoplasty surgeries in a year. Dr. Robinson has performed hundreds of eyelid surgeries and has hundreds of patients who can testify to his expertise. His double board-certification by the American Board of Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery and the American Board of Otolaryngology (head and neck surgery) is a testament to Dr. Robinson’s comprehensive knowledge of facial function and aesthetics. But the quality of the aesthetic results is not the only reason to seek an expert facial plastic surgeon. Cosmetic surgery is still surgery, and it therefore carries some risks if proper precautions are not taken; with this in mind, Dr. Robinson makes patient health his first priority.

Will I look like I’ve had "work done" after eyelid surgery?

Absolutely not. Dr. Burke Robinson prides himself on his subtle results and believes that he has not truly done his job unless the finished result is completely natural-looking. The ultimate goal of cosmetic surgery – and in particular, eyelid surgery – is to avoid attention to the eye for an extreme look; neither this or a tired look is desirable. Rather, a natural, well-rested appearance is the desired result. The eye area will not look overly tight after it has healed; instead, a rested and natural look will emerge. This result is possible because Dr. Robinson is careful not to remove more tissue than necessary to achieve the desired look. His experience with facial plastic surgery and blepharoplasty in particular has shown him that patients look best when the enhancements made to their facial features are subtle and beautiful.
