Kybella Injectable Double Chin Treatment
Kybella is an injectable treatment used for facial contouring. It is the first injectable treatment approved by the FDA for the reduction of fat cells that commonly form underneath the chin, known as submental fat. Kybella dissolves the fat cells to produce a more defined jawline and eliminate the appearance of the double chin.
A double chin is a common issue for both men and women, particularly as they age. According to a survey by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS), two-thirds of adults admit they are just as concerned about their double chin as they are about lines and wrinkles around their eyes. Submental fat can make you look like you have gained weight even if you haven’t gained a pound. It can also add years to your appearance, making you look much older than you feel.
Unfortunately, diet and exercise will not help to reverse a double chin. In the past, the best way to eliminate submental fullness was through surgical liposuction. Today, patients can achieve very similar results without incisions, anesthesia or an extended recovery period.
What is Kybella?
Kybella is deoxycholic acid, a substance naturally produced by the body to assist with the absorption of fats. When it is injected underneath the chin, it destroys fat cells that are then eliminated through the body’s natural processes. The result is a leaner, more sculpted chin that develops over time. Kybella was approved by the FDA in 2015, after clinical studies showed very good results in submental fat reduction.
Kybella is appropriate for men and women that are concerned about submental fullness. It can be used on any skin type and tone. The procedure has only been approved for treatment of submental fat at this time and should not be used on any other areas of the face or body.
About the Kybella Treatment Process
Kybella injections are performed right in our office by our physician assistant, Michelle Giglio. Lidocaine may be used prior to the injections to ensure comfort throughout the procedure. Most Kybella treatments take about 20 minutes to complete.
After Your Procedure
Although you may return to regular activities after your Kybella treatment, you will want to ice the treatment area throughout the day. For this reason, many of our patients decide to take their treatment day off so they can remain at home to recover from their procedure comfortably. Swelling and mild discomfort are typical after Kybella injections. The swelling may last 2-3 weeks before subsiding completely.
Most patients will begin to see results within 30 days of their initial Kybella treatment. Those with significant submental fullness may require multiple treatment sessions to achieve full results. In most cases, 3-4 treatment sessions, spaced about four weeks apart, will be sufficient. Once the final results become evident, they will be long-lasting since fat cells are permanently destroyed in the area.
