DR. ROBINSON: Lower eyelid surgery is very rejuvenating. Lower eyelid surgery is usually done mainly for puffiness or what patients will call bags in their lower lids. We have three fat pads in our orbit, our eye socket. The good lord put them there and they’re supposed to be there, but the problem is as the eyelid ages over time, some of that fat will protrude out past the bony rim of the orbit. And when it gets past the bony rim, it’s not the highest point and light reflects off that and then you create a shadow within the valley below. So what we’re trying to do is accomplish where the light is reflecting evenly again over the eyelid. So a very simple procedure in the operating room, we go behind the eyelid, make an incision in the lining and we can take out just little tear drop amounts of that fat so that the fat pad is even with the bone again. We don’t even put stitches in that incision, it heals up beautifully very quickly. Patients are back out within a week doing their thing. You may have a little bit of bruising, need a little makeup and that’s about it. It’s not a painful procedure post-op. Patients typically don’t take pain medicine. And what’s really nice about lower eyelid surgery is its forever, you don’t have to repeat it. What it doesn’t do it is does not address the texture of the skin. So if you have crepe paper wrinkling of the lower eyelid skin, then we’ll usually do a resurfacing procedure at the same time in the operating room.
