Dysport® – A New Type of BOTOX® Cosmetic Provided at Our Atlanta Area Offices
Dysport® is a new treatment that is much like BOTOX® Cosmetic in that it can safely and effectively reduce frown lines and forehead wrinkles by relaxing facial muscles. As a mainstay of cosmetic medicine, BOTOX® Cosmetic has long been used to reduce forehead wrinkles and frown lines. Now, with the introduction of Dysport®, our Atlanta area offices in Alpharetta and Dunwoody serving those from Duluth, Buckhead, Roswell, and across Georgia, BOTOX® Cosmetic is no longer the only option for quick and easy facial rejuvenation. The effects of Dysport® typically last from three to four months.
Dysport® is FDA approved for the treatment of glabellar lines — wrinkles between the brows — in the United States and is approved in many other countries around the world. Dysport® has also been used outside the United States for more than 15 years to treat neurological and ophthalmic disorders. Since the 1990s Dysport® has been used to effectively treat facial wrinkles.
One of the differences between BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® is that Dysport® has less protein and fewer antigens in its formula. From a clinical perspective this means Dysport® should last longer because it will be broken down by the body at a slower rate. Dysport® also diffuses more rapidly in the tissue than does BOTOX® Cosmetic, which, again, means the effects last longer than BOTOX® treatment with fewer injections.
Both BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® are used at our Atlanta area practice. Both treatments are very effective in addressing facial lines and wrinkles. Dr. Robinson points out that, “As always, competition is a good and healthy thing.” This is why, at our Atlanta area offices in Alpharetta and Dunwoody serving patients from Duluth, Buckhead, Roswell, and across Georgia, both Dysport® and BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments are provided. We always strive to provide our patients with the very latest treatment options.
Johnson & Johnson will also soon be releasing a similar product, named PurTox®, which will give patients and plastic surgeons more options when considering aesthetic anti-aging treatments.
BOTOX ® Cosmetic Treatment at Our Atlanta Area Practice
BOTOX® Cosmetic uses a purified protein derived from the Clostridium botulinum bacterium to reduce muscle activity causing frown lines between the brows, wrinkles on the forehead, and “crow’s feet” at the edges of the eyes. At our Atlanta area offices in Dunwoody and Alpharetta, Dr. Robinson administers tiny injections of BOTOX® Cosmetic under the skin, weakening specific muscles that contributing to frown lines and wrinkles. The virtually painless treatment takes just a few minutes and requires no downtime. Results are seen within five to seven days and can last up to six months. After BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment with our experienced Atlanta area double board certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon, you can expect a smooth, relaxed, and more youthful appearance.
BOTOX® Cosmetic Treatment Areas
The area between the eyebrows and above the nose — known as the glabella — is the most common area targeted through BOTOX® Cosmetic. Left untreated, these furrows can make a person look angry, frustrated, or even tired. After BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment in this area, individuals tend to look more rested and appear happier and more youthful.
“Crow’s feet,” or wrinkles at the edges of the eyes, is the second most common area that BOTOX® Cosmetic is used in to treat. In addition to reducing these lines, BOTOX® injections that are administered to this area may also slightly raise the eyebrows, opening up the eyes and creating a more youthful appearance. Some have referred to this as a chemical brow lift for this reason.
The forehead is the third most common area where BOTOX® Cosmetic is used to treat wrinkles. Wrinkles in the forehead are very common and BOTOX® Cosmetic has been shown to reduce this tell-tale sign of aging. At our Atlanta, Georgia area practice, Dr. Robinson will help you fully analyze your treatment options to determine if BOTOX® Cosmetic or other treatments are right for you.
In addition to the three most common treatment areas discussed above, Dr. Robinson has undergone advanced training in BOTOX® injection techniques that allow him to successfully treat other facial areas. At our offices in Alpharetta and Dunwoody, BOTOX® Cosmetic can be used to remove dimpling from the chin, reducing lines and wrinkles around the mouth, as well as raise the corners of the mouth. BOTOX® injections can also address wrinkles, lines, and bands in the neck area.
Some Thoughts about BOTOX® Cosmetic
The following thoughts are meant to help our patients better understand BOTOX® Cosmetic and the importance of seeking out a reputable and experienced provider.
Not all BOTOX® Cosmetic injectors are equal — Unfortunately, the provision of BOTOX® treatment is no longer limited to qualified plastic surgeons and dermatologists. Among those who perform BOTOX® injections are those who are not equally trained and do not have the same level of knowledge in the area of facial cosmetics. These individuals’ knowledge of facial anatomy, as well as their clinical skills, varies. Today, many physicians, nurses, and other medical and dental providers are performing BOTOX® injections. We feel it is important to see an experience provider with knowledge of facial aesthetics for the most effective possible BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment. Our Atlanta area double board certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon, Dr. Burke Robinson, has an in-depth knowledge of facial aesthetics and will be happy to discuss your BOTOX® Cosmetic possibilities.
Not all BOTOX® injections are of equal strength — BOTOX® Cosmetic is carefully reconstituted (mixed) by the manufacturer, Allergan, Inc. It is done so through guidelines that outline the use of a specified amount of sterile physiologic sodium water. Many providers sell BOTOX® Cosmetic at a reduced price by watering down or diluting it with more saline water than specified. This can result in inferior results or results that do not last as long.
Not all BOTOX® Cosmetic is fresh — At Robinson Facial Plastic Surgery, the BOTOX® Cosmetic we use is reconstituted and kept on ice, and, due to the volume of injections performed at our Atlanta area practice, is used within a couple days of its arrival. Once BOTOX® Cosmetic has been mixed with the saline water it loses its strength. Many providers will keep it for weeks, and therefore use a much less potent product.
Not all BOTOX® Cosmetic is FDA approved — Only BOTOX® Cosmetic from Allergan, Inc., is FDA approved. Unfortunately, products incorrectly marked as “BOTOX® Cosmetic” can be purchased from Canada, China, and other countries. These products can be counterfeit and are therefore not FDA approved. The risks associated with using a counterfeit BOTOX® Cosmetic product can be great. When a provider purchases counterfeit BOTOX® Cosmetic from other countries they save hundreds of dollars, but as the patient you have no assurance of the source, or how it was produced, stored, and shipped. Counterfeit BOTOX® Cosmetic is often sold under brand names such as BTX-A, Botox, and Botox-A. These bootleg BOTOX® Cosmetic products are illegal and can be contaminated with sugar and other materials that are not intended for human injection. In addition, the specific concentration of the product can be unknown, and as a result you may receive too strong an injection. This can result in adverse systemic consequences. If the price seems too good to be true, then it probably is. At our Atlanta area practice with offices in Alpharetta and Dunwoody, we, of course, provide our patients with only the highest quality, authentic BOTOX® injections. We provide our patients who visit us from Duluth, Buckhead, Roswell, and across Georgia, with the most beneficial possible BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments.
