About Facelift Surgery
If you are bothered by the signs of aging in your face, a facelift may be right for you. Technically known as rhytidectomy, a facelift is a surgical procedure used to remove excess, sagging skin and tighten underlying structures of the face (SMAS) and muscles tissues, restoring a more youthful and radiant appearance.
Everyone has unique facial bone structures and anatomic changes; just as every face is different, every facelift procedure is customized to the needs of the individual patient. In a traditional facelift, Dr. Robinson makes a small incision under the chin, performing liposuction on neck and jowls while also tightening the neck muscles. Then, additional incisions are carefully made on either side of the face, hidden behind the ears and in the hairline, which gives Dr. Robinson the access necessary to lift the facial and neck tissue, trim away excess fat, and tighten the underlying muscle as necessary. Once the incisions are closed, the areas are carefully dressed with bandages to speed healing.
Who is a Good Candidate for a Facelift?
Rhytidectomy tightens underlying structures of the facial muscle tissue, removing excess skin. Good candidates for facelift surgery are those who may have some degree of facial sagging — whether that be drooping jowls, fat deposits, loss of natural neckline, or diminishing definition of the jawline. In evaluating patient candidacy, Dr. Robinson pays special attention to facial musculature. “There are no facial exercises you can perform to tighten and tone that muscle back to where it was in the past,” Dr. Robinson reveals. “The only way to fix it is to go in surgically and tighten the underlying muscle.”
Recovery & Results
All patients spend the first post-op night in a private room at our facility, resting peacefully with medications administered through an IV. Within a day or two, most patients are up and about, but Dr. Robinson advises relaxation at home during the first week after surgery to facilitate a quick and healthy recovery. Some discomfort may stem from the tightness of surgical dressing, and patients are advised to maintain limited mobility including driving restriction during their recovery. Once healed, Dr. Robinson’s patients overwhelmingly find that the results are worth the slight inconveniences.

FACELIFT FAQ's
It is understandable that people considering a facelift have many questions about the procedure. After all, plastic surgery is a significant investment in one’s appearance and quality of life, and it is important to educate yourself on the procedure. Here to answer your questions, Dr. Burke Robinson is a leading facelift surgeon who performs only facial procedures and has extensive training & experience in providing facelifts to patients.
At what age is facelift surgery best performed?
According to Dr. Robinson, “It really depends on the individual. Some people are good candidates in their early 40’s; other people in their 50’s may still not need one. The important point is that you operate on the tissue, not on a number.” While the most common facelift patients are between 40 and 60 years of age, the surgery has been successfully performed on patients in their 70’s and beyond with great results.
What can I anticipate during recovery?
Generally, patients do not experience extreme discomfort after a facelift, but are offered medication to manage any pain during the recovery process. It’s normal for bandages to feel tight the first night after surgery, however this sensation dissipates the next morning when the bandages are removed. The initial set of sutures and staples will be removed a week after surgery and the final set removed within two weeks post-op. Until that time, patients must avoid strenuous activity and are prohibited from driving. Most patients resume their normal routine after the second week of recuperation.
How will I look a few years after a facelift?
While surgery cannot stop the aging process, a facelift procedure performed by Dr. Robinson enables graceful, natural aging for many years down the road. “If they have the procedure, they will always look better than they would if they didn’t have it,” says Dr. Robinson. “It’s like taking the big hand of a clock and turning it back a few hours. As soon as you leave the operating room, the clock starts to tick again, but the time is always going to be earlier than reality.”
How long do the results last?
The average facelift procedure results remain vibrant for seven to ten years, at which time some may choose to have a refreshment procedure. Dr. Robinson advises, “You don’t burn a bridge in having a facelift. If you come back in seven to ten years and it’s time to do another one, the scar tissue from the first facelift will give your surgeon something strong and tight to work with. It’s the one time that scar tissue is favorable.”
