When analyzing the beauty of a face, most patients recognize the importance of a well-defined chin to overall facial harmony. A chin with good proportions not only balances the face but also improves the profile. By simply enlarging the chin when it is too weak, it is possible to improve the patient’s overall facial appearance a great deal. In addition to performing the procedure by itself, our award-winning, Top Atlanta Facial Plastic Surgeon Dr. Burke Robinson occasionally recommends chin augmentation for his rhinoplasty patients in order to improve facial proportions.
About Chin Augmentation
Chin augmentation, or a chin implant, is a straightforward procedure that involves the placement of an implant through a tiny incision (about one-half inch) made just under the chin. Various sizes and shapes of chin implants are available that are designed to look and feel like natural tissue. Once the implant has been placed by Dr. Robinson, fine absorbable sutures are used to close the incision, allowing the chin to heal. After approximately five to seven days, most patients are able to resume normal activity.
Dr. Robinson has made the study of facial proportions and facial beauty his life’s work and can accurately assess whether or not chin augmentation will be beneficial to your overall look. With the assistance of digital imaging, Dr. Robinson works with his patients to demonstrate the potential change in which chin implants can result; patients are frequently surprised and delighted with the ability to see what they may look like with the implants. We encourage patients interested in chin augmentation to contact the Atlanta-area offices of Robinson Facial Plastic Surgery to schedule a consultation to learn more about how it can enhance your overall facial structure.
Who is a Good Candidate for a Chin Implant?
Long ago Leonardo Da’Vinci standardized many of the aesthetic rules that are applied to beauty and harmony of the face, and are still the standards today! One of those is that looking at your profile (side view) the front edge of the chin should meet or come very close to a line drawn straight down from the lower lip. When the chin falls short of this, not only is it less attractive but can even give the illusion of the nose being bigger than it really is. When the chin does have an inadequate projection, a chin implant can commonly and easily correct this.
Recovery & Results
The procedure is technically referred to as an Augmentation Mentoplasty. Through a very tiny incision underneath the chin, a solid siliconized implant can be placed and secured into position for a lifetime result. It is not uncommon to have some temporary numbness of the chin or lip that usually resolves over weeks to months, but has no impact on lip or chin movement. Recovery is rather quick. Bruising is rare, and swelling resolves in less than a week’s time.
