Facelift surgery is the third most popular facial plastic surgery procedure, and for good reason. Even as non-surgical procedures have been receiving media attention in recent years (think BOTOX® Cosmetic), great strides have been made in the field of facial plastic surgery. Trending toward safer, gentler and more effective methods, facelifts are now more than ever an option to consider when you want to reclaim your youthful look. New techniques enable those who undergo this surgery to reclaim the appearance of youth with safe, effective procedures that produce natural-looking results. Dr. Burke Robinson, our leading Atlanta-area surgeon, has performed facelift surgery on hundreds of happy patients at his Alpharetta and Dunwoody offices.
If you are bothered by the signs of aging in your face, a facelift may be right for you. Technically known as rhytidectomy, a facelift is a surgical procedure used to remove excess, sagging skin and tighten underlying structures of the face (SMAS) and muscles tissues, restoring a more youthful and radiant appearance.
"While aging is inevitable, youthfulness is attainable—and a facelift may help you look the way you feel inside," says Dr. Robinson.
There is no ideal facelift as everyone has unique facial bone structures and anatomic changes. Some people are good candidates in their early 40s for a mini-facelift; others may enjoy the benefits of a traditional facelift; and still others may be great candidates for one of the newest and most innovative procedures, the endoscopic mid-facelift.
Good candidates for facelift surgery are those who have experienced facial sagging, possibly including deep creases between the nose and mouth, drooping jowls, and fat deposits in the neck area. Dr. Robinson pays special attention to facial musculature when deciding whether or not a facelift is right for you. When the muscles in the neck and jawline loosen, creating a poorly defined jaw and neckline, a facelift can help. "There are no facial tightening exercises you can perform to tighten and tone that muscle back to where it was in the past," Dr. Robinson notes. "The only way to fix it is to go in surgically and tighten the underlying muscle."
Individual people interested in learning whether they are good candidates for facelift surgery should contact Dr. Robinson’s Alpharetta or Dunwoody offices for a consultation. More information about what makes good and bad candidates for facelift surgery may also be found on our frequently asked facelift questions page.
Just as every face is different, every facelift procedure is customized to the needs of the individual patient. Dr. Robinson has performed hundreds of facelifts for patients in the Atlanta area and beyond and recognizes that facelift surgery is never a one-size-fits-all affair. In general, facelift incisions are carefully made on either side of the face, hidden behind the hairline. Working through these incisions, Dr. Robinson lifts the facial and neck tissue, trims away excess fat, and tightens the underlying muscle as necessary to produce a younger and more natural look. Then the incisions are closed and dressed with bandages to speed healing.
Within a day or two, most facelift patients are up and about, but Dr. Robinson advises them to relax at home during the first week after surgery to give the body a chance to devote all of its energy to making a quick and healthy recovery. When patients do have complaints, they are mostly concerned with the tightness of the dressing on the first night and the fact that they will not be allowed to drive for 12 days after facelift surgery. However, once healed, Dr. Robinson’s patients overwhelmingly find that the results are worth the inconvenience. We invite you to view our before-and-after photos of our facelift patients – the results truly do speak for themselves.
"Just a note to thank you for the wonderful care and result from my recent facelift. After my surgery was completed my husband and I were waiting in the lobby of the hospital. The nurse came and took my husband to a clinic room. On the way back she said to him "Mr. C you really have a very beautiful daughter". My husband told her to go back and repeat to me what she had said to him. She did and I almost fell off my chair. I am 74 years old! Again thanks to you and your staff for a very pleasant experience."

"I can’t begin to tell all of you how very grateful and privileged I feel! I am so thankful for all you have done for me…after only a couple of weeks, my looks have changed dramatically to a more young and beautiful woman…and yet there’s more to come!!! I know it’s not over yet, but I couldn’t wait any longer to let all of you know how happy and beautiful I feel right now!! All of you have been so gracious and so kind to me!!"

The mini facelift offers much of the benefits of a traditional facelift with less down time, a smaller incision, and less expense. The procedure rejuvenates the lower third of the face including the jowls and neck. As with a traditional facelift, it addresses the deep layer of muscle tissues (SMAS) underneath the skin by advancing, repositioning and tightening it to help support the lift after surgery, and give its longevity. Any excess skin is trimmed, and the incisions are closed meticulously with fine sutures, thus minimizing the visibility of any incisions.
A mini facelift from Robinson Facial Plastic Surgery will not leave you with a "pulled" or operated appearance. Dr. Burke Robinson has extensive training and experience in performing the mini-facelift and is meticulous in his efforts to remove years of aging from your face.
A mini facelift is also referred to as an S-lift, or short incision facelift, due to the shape and smaller size of the incision. In general, the mini facelift has the same technique and longevity as the traditional facelift, but addresses a smaller area of concern.
"Thank you so much for everything you have done for me! My experience with you all could not have been better! You have made me feel so much happier about myself and I am in love with the result! I can not thank you enough!"
