Facelift Surgery in Atlanta (Rhytidectomy)
Facelift surgery, medically known as rhytidectomy, is one of the most effective procedures for comprehensive facial rejuvenation. At Robinson Facial Plastic Surgery in Atlanta, facelift surgery is designed to restore youthful facial contours by addressing sagging skin, jowls, deep facial folds, and loss of definition in the cheeks, jawline, and neck.
A facelift does more than tighten skin—it repositions and supports the deeper facial structures to create natural, long-lasting rejuvenation that looks refreshed rather than “pulled” or overdone.
Dr. Burke Robinson specializes exclusively in facial plastic surgery and performs facelift procedures tailored to each patient’s unique anatomy, aging pattern, and aesthetic goals.
What Does a Facelift Treat
A facelift can improve multiple visible signs of facial aging, including:
- Sagging skin in the midface and lower face
- Jowls along the jawline
- Deep nasolabial folds (smile lines)
- Loss of jawline and neck definition
- Loose or excess skin under the chin (“turkey neck”)
- General facial descent and tired appearance
Because facial aging occurs at different layers, Dr. Robinson evaluates both skin quality and deeper structural support to determine the most effective surgical approach.
SMAS Facelift Technique in Atlanta
Modern facelift surgery focuses on the SMAS (Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System)—the foundational layer of facial support beneath the skin.
Instead of simply tightening skin, a SMAS facelift repositions this deeper structural layer to restore natural lift and contour to the face and neck. This approach provides more durable and natural-looking results compared to older, skin-only facelift techniques.
By addressing the SMAS layer, Dr. Robinson is able to:
- Improve jawline definition
- Correct jowling
- Restore midface support
- Achieve long-lasting facial rejuvenation
Customized Facelift Surgery with Dr. Burke Robinson
Every facelift performed by Dr. Robinson is fully customized. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to facial rejuvenation.
Depending on your anatomy and goals, your surgical plan may include:
- Traditional SMAS facelift
- Neck lift for enhanced jawline and neck contouring
- Small incision beneath the chin for targeted neck refinement (when needed)
Incisions are carefully placed in discreet locations around the ears and hairline, allowing scars to heal naturally and remain well hidden.
In some cases, a small incision beneath the chin is used to further refine the neck and improve definition under the jawline.
Facelift Results and Recovery
Facelift surgery is performed with precision and attention to natural facial balance. Once healing is complete, patients typically notice:
- A more defined jawline
- Smoother facial contours
- Reduction in sagging and jowls
- A refreshed, rested appearance
While recovery varies, most patients experience progressive improvement over several weeks as swelling resolves and results become more refined over time.

FACELIFT FAQ's
It is understandable that people considering a facelift have many questions about the procedure. After all, plastic surgery is a significant investment in one’s appearance and quality of life, and it is important to educate yourself on the procedure. Here to answer your questions, Dr. Burke Robinson is a leading facelift surgeon who performs only facial procedures and has extensive training & experience in providing facelifts to patients.
At what age is facelift surgery best performed?
According to Dr. Robinson, “It really depends on the individual. Some people are good candidates in their early 40’s; other people in their 50’s may still not need one. The important point is that you operate on the tissue, not on a number.” While the most common facelift patients are between 40 and 60 years of age, the surgery has been successfully performed on patients in their 70’s and beyond with great results.
What can I anticipate during recovery?
Generally, patients do not experience extreme discomfort after a facelift, but are offered medication to manage any pain during the recovery process. It’s normal for bandages to feel tight the first night after surgery, however this sensation dissipates the next morning when the bandages are removed. The initial set of sutures and staples will be removed a week after surgery and the final set removed within two weeks post-op. Until that time, patients must avoid strenuous activity and are prohibited from driving. Most patients resume their normal routine after the second week of recuperation.
How will I look a few years after a facelift?
While surgery cannot stop the aging process, a facelift procedure performed by Dr. Robinson enables graceful, natural aging for many years down the road. “If they have the procedure, they will always look better than they would if they didn’t have it,” says Dr. Robinson. “It’s like taking the big hand of a clock and turning it back a few hours. As soon as you leave the operating room, the clock starts to tick again, but the time is always going to be earlier than reality.”
How long do the results last?
The average facelift procedure results remain vibrant for seven to ten years, at which time some may choose to have a refreshment procedure. Dr. Robinson advises, “You don’t burn a bridge in having a facelift. If you come back in seven to ten years and it’s time to do another one, the scar tissue from the first facelift will give your surgeon something strong and tight to work with. It’s the one time that scar tissue is favorable.”
At Robinson Facial Plastic Surgery, our priority is YOU, the patient. We look forward to helping you!
