6 Tips to Finding Your Filler Fix

Not everyone has naturally full cheeks and plump lips. And as we age, deep facial creases and wrinkles set in, leading to many of us looking older than we actually are. Non-invasive, non-surgical rejuvenation treatments can correct age-related volume loss, restore volume and fullness, plump thin lips and improve recessed scars. Unsure how to choose the right filler for you? Here’s what you should know:

1.) Dermal fillers aren’t the same as Botox and Dysport.

Botox and Dysport are neurotoxins. They “freeze” muscles to reduce wrinkles, while fillers smooth out skin by filling wrinkles. Fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm contain hyaluronic acid, which stores moisture and gives skin a more plump, hydrated look. And while hyaluronic acid is topically used to moisturize through a cream or serum, only an injectable hyaluronic acid can restore lost volume.

2.) One injection could be all you need.

Injectable hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers can add volume and decrease wrinkles in a single visit, and results can typically last 3 to 9 months with fillers depending on location – or even up to 2 years, with collagen biostimulators depending on the injection location.

3.) Filler techniques have improved, leading to more natural-looking results.

The goal is a natural-looking face, not duck lips. Years ago, fillers were often injected directly into the wrinkles themselves. Now, a more successful technique involves plumping and lifting other parts of the face for more natural-looking results.

4.) Fillers can be used for both prevention and treatment.

People are starting treatments younger than ever before. While everyone ages differently, dermatologists recommend considering preventative injections rather than playing catch up with corrective injections. But don’t forget: there are other ways to prevent premature signs of aging. Simply wearing sunscreen and using retinols can help significantly.

5.) Different fillers do different things.

Particle sizes within fillers can deliver different results. Larger particle sizes within some fillers, such as Restylane Lyft, help re-project flattened or concave cheeks, while others like Restylane Silk have a smaller particle sizes and work best on fine lines and lips.

6.) Consider pricing and timing.

If the price sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Inexpensive fillers, say, less than $250, can be diluted or counterfeit. Given that fillers should be administered from a trained, skilled injector, your safest and most effective results come from an experienced professional. And while fillers are considered safe, it’s recommended to hold off on an injection if you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, battling a sinus infection or (and we aren’t kidding) about to have a teeth cleaning or dental work.
