Among all skincare products, retinol is the most admired largely due to its long history of scientifically proven results. Working on the outermost superficial layer of skin, retinoids has shown to improve tone and texture, plus stimulate collagen production and counteract signs of aging.
But if retinols are so wonderful, why isn’t everyone using them? All the potency comes at a price. While they’re filled with proven benefits, many patients experience irksome issues such as redness, flakiness, or dryness.
The good news? There are retinol alternatives that are also efficacious when it comes to replicating retinol’s effects. Here’s what some consider are the best alternatives.
For a direct swap to retinol: bakuchiol
This plant-based antioxidant increases the rate of cell turnover while promoting collagen and elastin production to decrease the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Much less irritating than retinoids, it can be used on sensitive skin.
For exfoliation found in retinol: AHAs
To gently exfoliate the top layers of skin and reveal brighter, more even skin tone, AHAs such as glycolic or lactic acid are the answer. Many products use a combination of AHAs in one formulation. But for those with more sensitive skin, select lactic acid thanks to its larger molecule that doesn’t penetrate as deeply.
For a collagen boost provided by retinol: peptides
Peptides are short chains of amino acids that are the building blocks of collagen. Peptides have been proven to stimulate the production of both collagen and elasticity, helping lift and firm skin.
For skin brightening provided by retinol: vitamin C
This powerful antioxidant combats free radicals that lead to hyperpigmentation, combats sun damage, and events out skin tone.
Another option is glutathione. This powerful antioxidant is known for its pigment-correcting properties.
